Investing

Platinum serves as a diversifier within a diversifier.  The fundamental differences between platinum and gold make platinum an excellent complement to gold in investor portfolios.

Platinum is primarily an industrial commodity, while gold is a financial asset.

Platinum prices tend to rise sooner in the economic cycle than gold prices.  Platinum prices are more responsive to changes in industrial demand for platinum, which tends to rise as economies expand.

Platinum is used in a wide variety of industrial products and applications.

Platinum prices are more volatile than those of gold, given the smaller size of the platinum market.

There are no large above ground inventories of platinum.  Above ground gold stocks total approximately 2 billion ounces in bullion and coinage vs. 6.5 million ounces worldwide for platinum.

Facts

Platinum content guaranteed -- The American Eagle Platinum is the only platinum bullion coin whose weight, content and .9995 purity are guaranteed by the United States Government.

All American Eagles are legal tender coins, with their face value imprinted in U.S. dollars. Although their face value is largely symbolic, it provides proof of their authenticity as official U.S. coinage. The one-ounce platinum coin displays the highest face value ($100) ever to appear on a U.S. coin.

Minted at highest purity -- All American Eagles are legal tender coins, with their face value imprinted in U.S. dollars. Although their face value is largely symbolic, it provides proof of their authenticity as official U.S. coinage. The one-ounce platinum coin displays the highest face value ($100) ever to appear on a U.S. coin.

Instantly liquid -- Both American Eagle gold & platinum coins are easy to sell at precious metal market value almost anywhere in the world and anytime. Since their inception in 1986, American Eagles have become established as the international standard for gold bullion investment coins.

Easy to store and transport -- Platinum bullion coins are compact, convenient, and easy to store or transport. They can be packed securely in 3-inch tall, break-proof plastic tubes that are perfect for home safes and bank safety deposit boxes.

Better than bars and ingots -- Platinum coins, like their gold counterparts, are preferred over gold bars and ingots because they're far easier to sell, store, and transport, and do not incur the additional costs of assaying when it is time for you to sell.

History

Congressionally authorized American Eagle Bullion coins provide investors with a convenient and cost effective way to add a small amount of physical platinum, gold, or silver to their investment portfolios. The American Eagle Bullion program was launched in 1986 with the sale of gold and silver bullion coins. Platinum was added to the American Eagle Bullion family in 1997. A bullion coin is a coin that is valued by its weight in a specific precious metal. Unlike commemorative or numismatic coins valued by limited mintage, rarity, condition and age, bullion coins are purchased by investors seeking a simple and tangible means to own and invest in the gold, silver, and platinum markets. American Eagle Gold and Platinum Bullion coins are available in four denominations: one ounce, one-half ounce, one-quarter ounce, and one-tenth ounce while the silver bullion coin is only available in the one ounce size. American Eagle Bullion Coins are not sold to the general public directly from the United States Mint. Rather, they are available through a network of distributors.

Design

The design of the Platinum American Eagle features a wonderfully vivid close up of the Statue of Liberty on the obverse designed by John M. Mercanti and an eagle in flight above a rising sun on the reverse designed by Thomas D. Rogers.
